US Embassy Denies Uganda’s Prime Minister Visa over Besigye’s Saga

Relationship between Uganda and one of her donors US has been stretched further with the US Mission clinging on Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda’s VISA.

Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda.

Rugunda was allegedly invited by the UN to a conference before the end of month.

As usual, the Ministry of Internal Affairs sent his names and the different dignitaries he intends to travel with to the US Embassy.

The normal process always takes just a day, however, the embassy held the passports and refused to give VISAs for over a week to the surprise of Rugunda and the rest.

It was not until yesterday 21 that Rugunda was forced to go direct to the Embassy to find out why his passport was held.

Sources inside the PM’s office reveal that even with his presence at the embassy, Rugunda was not given a VISA until intervention from above and after many hours of negotiation.

Sources also indicate that the reason for the VISA impasse was government’s treatment of former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye.

Besigye fighting with Police at his home in Kasangati a month ago.

The government and the US have not had a rosy relationship since the Feb 18 elections with the latter accusing the former of violating the rights of Dr Besigye and opposition supporters.
