Tanzania Gets 268 mln USD for Lake Victoria-Tabora Water Project

The government of Tanzania said on Tuesday it got 268 million U.S. dollars for the construction of a water pipeline from Lake Victoria to the country’s central region of Tabora.

Lake Victoria.

Isaack Kamwelwe, the east African nation’s Deputy Minister for Water and Irrigation, said implementation of the project will start in July this year.

"The government is now in the process of finding contractors for the project," he told the National Assembly in the country’s political capital of Dodoma.

Kamwelwe said the water pipeline will be constructed from Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, to Tabora town, Igunga, Nzega and Sikonge.

He said the project will also cover a total of 89 villages located on the radius of 12 kilometers from the pipeline.

"Upon completion, the project will be an ultimate solution to the chronic water woes along the areas that the pipeline will pass through," said the deputy minister.
