Bagaza died this morning at a Brussels hospital where he was receiving treatment.
In a tweet, current President Pierre Nkurunziza tweeted his “condolences to his family and all Burundians.

“It is with great sadness that I learned of the disappearance of President Bagaza. Condolences to his family and to all Burundians,” Nkurunziza said.

Bagaza came to power in a coup in 1976 and ruled until he was deposed in 1987.

Much of the country’s infrastructure and industry was built up during this time and it was one of the most stable periods in the country’s post-independence history.

Colonel Jean-Baptiste Bagaza (born 29 August 1946) was Burundi’s second president between November 10, 1976 to September 3, 1987.

While traveling abroad, Bagaza was deposed in a military coup d’état.
