Benin Set to Hold Presidential run-off Poll on March 20

Benin will on Sunday hold the second round of presidential polls a run-off between Prime Minister Lionel Zinsou and businessman Patrice Talon, the government has announced.

The two are competing to replace outgoing President Yayi Boni, whose second term ends on April 6.

Zinsou, supported by the incumbent president, took the lead among 33 candidates in the first round, winning some 28.4 percent of the vote, against around 24.8 percent for his challenger Talon.

Yet until Monday, Talon has gained backing from 24 defeated candidates, among them Sebastien Ajavon, who took about 23 percent of the vote, according to a source close to his offices.

Over 3.01 million votes cast have been registered for the first round of the presidential polls held on March 6.
