Rayon Sports have claimed the 2016/2017 Rwanda Premier League title with four matches to spare, thanks to a 2-1 win over Mukura on Wednesday (17 May 2017) in Kigali.

Malian-born Moussa Camara scored the opener on 13 minutes heading home from a Pierrot Kwizera free-kick, before sealing his brace on 55 minutes. Yussuf Habimana pulled one back for the visitors, but it was little enough to stop Rayon from celebrating their eighth domestic league triumph.

The narrow win took Rayon’s tally to 67 points, 13 more than rivals APR from 26 games each, meaning the outcome of the remaining four matches will have no effect at the summit. The breakdown for Rayon is 21 wins, four draws and a loss with 57 goals against 15.

It is the first time since 2013 that Rayon has won the league, and it gives them the right to represent Rwanda in next year’s Total CAF Champions League.

Rayon’s other league titles were in 1975, 1981, 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2004.
