Rwanda Premier League: Police FC beat AS Kigali

Police Football Club boosted its chances of reversing the Azam National Premier League table with a crucial 1-0 win against AS Kigali in a match played at Kicukiro stadium on Sunday.

Striker, Danny Usengimana scored the lonely vital goal in the 65th minute after AS Kigali defenders failed to clear the ball from their goal-area.

The law enforcers seemed a beatable side at the start of the match as they played without their five key players; captain Innocent Habyarimana, midfielders Rashid Kalisa and Imran Nshimiyima, winger Mwemere Ngirinshuti and Gaby Mugabo.

Despite the absence of strong-holds, Andre Cassa Mbugo’s Police managed to contain the visitors, and utilized one of the very few chances they got.

The win leaves Police in fifth place with 27 points, five behind two tied table leaders Rayon Sport and Mukura, both with 32 points.

Police, however, remains with a game in hand against Ettencelles, their last match of the first round.

Coach Cassa Mbugo praised the performance of his players.

“I am happy with how the players performed today; they managed to be in the game from start to the end and played as a thirst team looking for a win,” Mbugo said.

He added: “This win has put us in the title contention. Although it’s still early to say that, always our focus is to win the title and we hope to turn the table around in the second round.”
