Scientists spooked as mystery ’alien megastructure’ begins flashing

A STAR that many believed could be proof of alien life has been acting very strangely.

PROOF: Hopes that Tabby’s star could be a ’Dyson Sphere’ have been ignited with new research

KIC 8462852 or Tabby’s star has been fading at an astonishing rate unlike any other star observed in our galaxy.

Yale boffins spotted the star late last year when it began making unusual fluctuations in its light.

Ecstatic alien-seekers claimed it could be a ’Dyson Sphere’ - a hypothetical megastructure that wraps around a star to harness its power output – prompting many to speculate highly intelligent life 1,480 light-years away could be responsible.

Scientists were quick to dismiss the claims at first but now two have come forward to admit something very mysterious is going on.

NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope spent four years observing the star and Caltech astronomer Ben Montet and Joshua Simon of the Carnegi Institute have been crunching the numbers.

Their new study ’KIC 8462852 faded throughout the Kepler mission’ reports that the ENTIRE star has been dimming at a dramatic rate.

"We spent a long time trying to convince ourselves this wasn’t real," Montet told Gizmodo.

"We just weren’t able to."

The researchers analysed data on 193 nearby stars and 255 stars that are similar to Tabby’s star but it appears there is nothing else like it in our galaxy.

Montet claims that the star is dimming at such an incredible rate it cannot be explained by scientific hypotheses, like an irregular shape or comet swarms.

He was quick to brush off suggestions this could prove that aliens are to blame but said that the study could prove an entirely new space phenomenon is at work.

The study which has not been peer reviewed has just been published online so other scientists can mull the results.
