Selena Gomez is taking time away from the spotlight after Instagram feud with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber

Selena Gomez is taking a career hiatus to focus on her "health", mere weeks after her very public row with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber.

The ’Come & Get It’ singer announced on Tuesday (August 30) that this time away from the spotlight is a necessity as she continues to battle lupus.

"As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways," Gomez told People in a statement to her fans. "I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side-effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.

"I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off. Thank you to all my fans for your support.
You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issue."

Gomez revealed she’d been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease last October, which caused a previous hiatus from the spotlight last summer.

"I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy," Gomez said at the time. "That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke."

This latest flare-up comes just two weeks after Gomez called out her ex Justin Bieber for asking his fans to stop commenting on his romance with new girlfriend Sofia Richie.

"If you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol," Gomez wrote on Instagram.

"It should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you. They were there for you before anyone."

The backlash grew so intense for Bieber that he deleted his Instagram - although it wasn’t long before Gomez admitted she’d been wrong to weigh in.

"What I said was selfish and pointless," Gomez told her Snapchat followers.

It is not yet clear how long Gomez’s current hiatus will last, as she is signed to return for 2018’s Hotel Transylvania 3.

Her ’Revival’ tour is also scheduled to continue with US dates in September, before travelling across the Atlantic to Manchester, Birmingham and London in November.
