Reopening of the railway Zambia - Tanzania after a 5 day strike

The railway linking Zambia to the port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania , was reopened Friday after five days of strike of the employees of the Authority railways Tanzania - Zambia ( TAZARA ), the movement was declared illegal by the justice , according to a statement.

" The suspension of activities was lifted and all train services resumed with immediate effect," said the bi-national company that operates the line and whose employees were on strike Monday to demand five months salary arrears.

The company, jointly owned by Zambia and Tanzania, is in deficit for over 10 years and is struggling to cope with most operating expenses: spare parts for locomotives and rolling stock , and fuel wages.

Built by Chinese and 1,863 km long , the TAZARA line is , since its opening in 1976, a key route for exports from the Zambian copper and cobalt that pass through the port of Dar es Salaam.
