Dinesh calls for govt’s clarification on Moon’s Rwanda, Bosnia statement

Joint Opposition Leader, Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardane yesterday stressed that the government should make a clear statement refuting the harmful statement by UN Secretary General, within the next one week before Sri Lankan leaders attend the United Nations General Assembly sessions.

Addressing the media yesterday at the N. M. Perera Centre, Borella, MP Gunawardane charged that the Government remained dumb on this statement by UN Secretary General which compared Sri Lanka’s war against the LTTE with acts of genocide in Rwanda and Bosnia.

Completely condemning the UN Secretary General’s statement, MP Gunwardane further said that the Government should has self confidence to refute the statement.

“Making personal comments outside his prepared speech made at the Colombo Hilton during his recent visit to Sri Lanka, UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon compared Sri Lanka’s war against LTTE terrorism to acts of genocide in Ruwanda and Bosnia. Under no circumstances can the two situations be compared,” MP Gunawardena said.

He further said; “by making such a statement, the UN Secretary General has tarnished the dignity of the war heroes as well as the good image of this sovereign nation”.

He added that the silence of the government on this statement proved that the Government accepts it and it will add more value to his comment.
