Clinton-Trump Battle Reopens Old Balkan Wounds

Americans may be undecided as to how to vote in the US Presidential elections in November - but the preferences of many people in the Balkans were set a long time ago.

“He’s different and he will change America,” Goran, a 24-year-old Bosnian Serb supporter of US Republican candidate Donald Trump, says.

But the worker at a gas station in Banja Luka, the main city in the Bosnian Serb entity, Republika Srpska, does not think Trump will be Barrack Obama’s successor.

“I don’t think they will let him win ... I think these elections are already decided, and they will go for Hillary [Clinton],” he adds.

As Goran’s words indicate, while Clinton and Trump are struggling to win over voters in the US, each has strong supporters and steadfast fans in the Balkans.

In Serbia, the Trump Fan Club has a Facebook page with thousands of followers who are informed daily of Trump’s latest remarks about illegal migrants, terrorism, Muslims or Russia.

Meanwhile, thousands of Albanians have expressed verbal support for Clinton through Facebook and Twitter accounts entitled “Albanians for Hillary Clinton.”

There, her activities and campaign messages are distributed alongside videos of the Clintons’ previous support for Albanians.
