Mulago hospital is the main referral hospital and the main treatment for cancer. The cancer unit treats most of the patients in the country. The radio therapy machine broke down and the country is looking at $1.8 million to replace it.

Uganda’s one and only radiotherapy machine breaks down, Cancer patients at risk

Mulago hospital gets 44,000 referrals from within the country, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. Most of the patients require radio therapy (70 %+).

The medical staffs are concerned about this even more than the patients.
Most cancers require chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

This has brought a lot of concern to Ugandans and also people outside Uganda especially those that have been nursing cancer patients in the country.

One person said, "Museveni should stop fighting Besigye, let him start fighting Cancer."

Patients can still travel to other Great Lakes countries or fly abroad. However, chemotherapy and surgery are still available.

The recent visit to Mulago hospital (unannounced) by President Yoweri Museveni is likely to put some changes in place.

Let’s wait whether his recent visit to Mulago hospital could change something.

The government of Uganda does fund some abroad trips for the most urgent cases.
