Uganda: Tourism Student Arrested With 120 Chameleons

Flying Squad unit of police and officials from Natural Resource Conservation Network have arrested two people including a student, of Tourism who have been running a racket to capture and sell endangered species of chameleons.

The suspects have been identified as Odeke Isaac 28 and Otekoit Justin 41.

Laban Muhindo the communications Natural Resource Conservation Network said the they received a tipoff recently regarding operation of a racket in the district dealing in endangered species like chameleons on a regular basis.

“Acting on the information, a team of NRCN and Police conducted a raid and arrested the two persons. They also seized 120 chameleons from them, which they had kept for selling to a buyer” He said.

He said during investigation, it was revealed that the racket also opened a website recently in a bid to attract foreign buyers especially from Netherlands, Czech Republic, Germany and Kenya.

“They have been operating on OLX website in the name of Odeke Isaac who is mentioned as the contact person on the website,” Since the chameleons are considered as endangered species, the arrested persons are currently being detained at CPS Bukedea waiting to appear in courts of Law for Prosecutions.

Muhindo added that the arrested persons confessed that they were involved in capturing and trading chameleons since last couple of years. “They said they had been capturing the chameleons from different locations of Eastern Uganda.

They sold a chameleon at a price as high as 200,000Uganda Shillings. They claimed that the chameleons have a medicinal value for which different buyers are interested and also work as ornamental purposes.
